"The Little Mermaid" you might say? Perhaps. When I watched the trailer for the live action I was immediately drawn to this theme. And then, Florence + The Machine released the song "Mermaids" by the same time the movie came out. That was it: I had to work with the material I've been avoiding this whole time, water.

The song is so raw and fun; the imagery that it evokes is glamorous but at the same time sad and... brutal? And I love this kind of juxtaposition, so I had to translate that into something visual.
Water is such a difficult material to work with; I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole physics of it. But I managed to be pretty pleased with the final product, and that's what matters to me: the learning curve. Also, I've pushed myself out of my comfort zone, trying to use a muted color palette.
For the lettering, UGH. Don't even get me started, I absolutely loved this. The whole idea of containing something so powerful as water inside something that resembles a precious metal speaks volumes to me. And it fits the overall idea.
